How to choose your first tractor for a small farm
Choosing a first tractor is a long-term commitment. This guide walks through the four decisions that matter most: horsepower (35-75 hp for most small operations), transmission type (mechanical vs hydrostatic vs CVT), hydraulic flow rates, and dealer proximity.
1. Horsepower
For under-50 ha farms, 35-75 hp covers 95% of tasks. Going bigger costs more in fuel and tyres without practical benefit.
2. Transmission
Hydrostatic suits loader work. CVT is comfortable but expensive. Mechanical 12+12 remains the price-performance leader.
