Shayar is located in the Aksu Prefecture of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, situated on the northern edge of the Taklamakan Desert and along the middle reaches of the Tarim River. The surrounding landscape is characterized by vast desert oases, where fertile plains are reclaimed from the arid environment through extensive irrigation systems fed by glacial meltwater and river sources.

The region is a vital hub for industrial-scale agriculture, most notably recognized as one of China's premier cotton-producing areas.
