About agriculture in Toribio

Toribio is located in the northeastern part of the Cauca Department, nestled within the rugged Central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes. The surrounding rural landscape is characterized by steep mountain slopes, deep valleys, and a variety of thermal floors ranging from temperate to cold climates. The area is dominated by small-scale family plots and indigenous communal lands that follow the contours of the high-altitude terrain.

The agricultural backbone of the region is centered on coffee cultivation, which thrives in the fertile volcanic soils and ideal altitude. In addition to high-quality coffee, local farmers grow a variety of subsistence and market crops including beans, maize, cassava, and various Andean fruits. Livestock farming, particularly cattle and small ruminants, is also practiced in the more accessible plateau areas and valley floors.

Farm workers and agronomists coming to Toribio can expect a high demand for labor during the primary coffee harvest seasons. Opportunities exist within local agricultural cooperatives and associations that focus on organic and fair-trade production. Due to the mountainous geography, much of the work is physically demanding and requires experience with steep-slope farming techniques and traditional harvesting methods.
