About agriculture in Labasa
Labasa is the largest town on Vanua Levu, Fiji's second-largest island, situated in the Northern Division. It lies on the fertile plains of the Labasa River delta, surrounded by rolling hills and vast stretches of rural landscapes. The area is characterized by its tropical climate and open terrain, which contrasts with the more mountainous regions of the island.
The region's economy is heavily centered on the sugar industry, with extensive sugarcane plantations dominating the landscape. Beyond sugar, local farms produce various root crops such as dalo and cassava, as well as tropical fruits and vegetables for local markets. Livestock farming, particularly cattle and goat rearing, is also common in the drier inland areas of the Northern Division.
For agricultural professionals and farm workers, Labasa offers significant opportunities, especially during the sugarcane crushing season from June to December. Employment often revolves around the Fiji Sugar Corporation's mill, harvesting operations, and transportation. Agronomists can find work related to soil health, crop diversification, and improving the productivity of smallholder farms in a tropical environment.
