About agriculture in Nîmes

Nîmes is located in the Gard department of the Occitanie region in southern France, situated between the Mediterranean Sea and the Cévennes hills. The surrounding rural landscape is characterized by rolling hills, dry limestone scrublands known as garrigue, and fertile alluvial plains. This Mediterranean environment enjoys hot, dry summers and mild winters, creating a picturesque countryside dotted with traditional stone farmhouses and ancient Roman remains.

The region around Nîmes is highly renowned for its viticulture, producing quality Costières de Nîmes wines from extensive vineyards. In addition to grapes, local farms cultivate olives, stone fruits such as peaches and apricots, and a variety of vegetables in the fertile Costières plain. Livestock farming, though less dominant than crop cultivation, includes sheep grazing in the drier hilly areas and the famous Camargue bulls and horses in the nearby wetlands to the south.

For agronomists and farm workers, Nîmes offers significant seasonal employment, particularly during the grape harvest from late August to October, and the summer fruit picking season from June to August. Jobs range from manual harvesting and pruning to specialized roles in wineries and farm management. Workers should expect hot working conditions in the summer and should ideally have some knowledge of French, though major agricultural enterprises are accustomed to hosting international seasonal labor.
