About agriculture in Kalyves

Kalyves is a picturesque seaside town located in the Apokoronas region of Chania, on the northern coast of Crete. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rolling hills, fertile valleys, and a backdrop of the majestic White Mountains. The rural areas around the village are lush and well-watered by local rivers, creating an environment that is both scenic and agriculturally productive.

The primary agricultural focus in this part of Crete is olive cultivation, with extensive groves producing high-quality extra virgin olive oil. In addition to olives, the fertile soil supports citrus orchards, particularly oranges and lemons, as well as vineyards and avocado plantations. Small-scale livestock farming, primarily sheep and goats, is also common in the hilly terrain surrounding the town.

For agronomists and farm workers, seasonal opportunities are most abundant during the winter olive harvest from November to February. Citrus harvesting provides additional work throughout the spring. Laborers can expect a Mediterranean climate with mild, rainy winters and hot summers. Jobs typically involve manual harvesting, pruning, and maintenance of irrigation systems within family-run estates and local cooperatives.
