About agriculture in Kalamata

Kalamata is the capital of the Messenia region in the southwestern Peloponnese. It sits at the head of the Messenian Gulf, framed by the Taygetos Mountains. The surrounding countryside is a lush, fertile plain known as the "Garden of Greece," characterized by vast olive groves and rolling hills that extend towards the sea.

The region is world-renowned for its Kalamata olives and high-quality extra virgin olive oil. Beyond olives, the local agriculture includes extensive production of dried figs, citrus fruits, and grapes for wine and raisins. Livestock farming, particularly sheep and goat rearing for traditional cheeses, also plays a significant role in the rural economy.

For agronomists and seasonal workers, the peak demand coincides with the olive harvest from late autumn through winter. There are also opportunities during the citrus and fig seasons in late summer and early autumn. Jobs often involve harvesting, processing in local mills, or technical advisory roles in modern irrigation and organic farming practices.
