About agriculture in La Unión

La Unión is situated in the eastern highlands of Guatemala, within the department of Zacapa. Unlike the dry lowlands of the Motagua Valley, this area is characterized by the rugged terrain of the Sierra de las Minas mountain range. The surrounding landscape features lush green mountains, cloud forests, and a cooler, more humid climate that contrasts sharply with the arid plains found nearby.

The local economy is deeply rooted in coffee production, which thrives at these higher altitudes. Numerous small and medium-sized plantations dot the mountainsides, producing high-quality beans for export. In addition to coffee, farmers cultivate maize and beans for local consumption, and there is some production of cardamom and citrus fruits. Small-scale livestock farming, primarily cattle for dairy and meat, also exists in the lower elevations of the municipality.

For agronomists and agricultural workers, La Unión offers significant opportunities during the coffee harvest season, typically from November to March. There is a consistent demand for skilled labor in harvesting and processing, as well as for specialists in sustainable coffee cultivation and pest management. Professionals can expect a traditional mountain farming environment where expertise in technical plantation management and soil conservation is highly valued.
