About agriculture in Aurangabad

Aurangabad is located in the southern part of Bihar state in northeastern India, situated along the eastern bank of the Son River. The surrounding landscape transitions from the fertile, flat alluvial South Bihar Plains in the north and west to the undulating, rocky hills approaching the Chotanagpur Plateau in the south. The rural areas are defined by a network of irrigation canals, vast green fields during the monsoon, and scattered agricultural settlements that depend heavily on the local river systems for water.

The region is highly productive and known as one of the primary foodgrain hubs of Bihar. Agriculture is dominated by double-cropping systems, with rice (paddy) being the chief crop during the summer monsoon, followed by wheat in the drier winter season. In addition to these staples, local farms produce pulses like lentils and chickpeas, oilseeds, and sugarcane. In recent years, commercial strawberry cultivation has successfully emerged in the southern blocks, alongside traditional specialty cash crops like the prized Magahi betel leaf (paan).

For agricultural specialists and laborers, peak employment opportunities align with the transplanting and harvesting cycles of rice and wheat in mid-summer and winter. Laborers can find opportunities in grain harvesting, canal maintenance, and seasonal strawberry picking, while agronomists are increasingly in demand to optimize irrigation, manage soil health in the more rocky southern tracts, and introduce modern pest management techniques. Workers coming to the area should prepare for highly variable seasonal weather, with extremely hot summer temperatures and intense monsoon rains.
