About agriculture in Ahwa

Ahwa is the administrative headquarters of the Dangs district, nestled in the southern part of Gujarat, India. It is situated on a high plateau in the Sahyadri (Western Ghats) mountain range, surrounded by dense, lush teak and bamboo forests, rolling hills, and numerous seasonal streams and waterfalls. The rural landscape around Ahwa is highly picturesque but rugged, characterized by small, scattered tribal hamlets and terraced fields carved into the undulating hillsides.

Agriculture in the surrounding Dang region is predominantly rainfed and traditional, carried out mostly by local tribal communities on small landholdings. The staple crop is nagli (finger millet), which is highly suited to the hilly terrain and acidic soils, alongside paddy (rice), vari (little millet), maize, and pulses like pigeon pea (tur). Livestock farming is characterized by indigenous cattle, goats, and backyard poultry, which serve as crucial secondary sources of income and food security for the local farmers.

For visiting agronomists and farm workers, Ahwa offers a unique environment centered on sustainable, organic, and rainfed farming practices. The peak agricultural season runs during and immediately after the southwest monsoon, from June to November, which is when demand for sowing, transplanting, and harvesting labor is highest. Agronomists can find opportunities in government extension programs, non-governmental organizations focusing on watershed management, and initiatives aimed at improving crop yields of millets and forest-based products.
