About agriculture in Arvi

Arvi is located in the Wardha district of Maharashtra, in the central part of India's Vidarbha region. The surrounding landscape features the characteristic flat to gently undulating plains of the Deccan Plateau, covered with rich, dark basaltic soil known as black cotton soil. The rural outskirts are dominated by expansive agricultural fields interspersed with small villages, seasonal streams, and local irrigation channels that sustain the region's farming communities.

The region's agriculture is highly centered around cash crops, with cotton and soybeans being the primary pillars of the local farming economy. Agronomists will also observe extensive cultivation of pigeon peas (tur dal), chickpeas, and wheat during the drier rabi season. While crop cultivation dominates, small-scale dairy farming and livestock rearing, particularly cattle and goats, provide essential secondary income and organic manure for the local farms.

For farm workers and agronomists, seasonal demand peaks twice a year: during the monsoon sowing in June and July, and the intensive cotton and soybean harvesting from October to January. Opportunities exist for seasonal labor in harvesting and processing, as well as roles for agricultural specialists in soil health management, pest control, and efficient irrigation practices. Visitors should prepare for very hot, semi-arid weather conditions, particularly in the pre-monsoon months, and a rural work environment that heavily relies on traditional techniques alongside expanding mechanization.
