About agriculture in Gangoh

Gangoh is situated in the Saharanpur district of southwestern Uttar Pradesh, India, close to the border of Haryana. The town is nestled in the extremely fertile Upper Doab region, the flat alluvial plain between the Ganges and Yamuna rivers. The surrounding countryside is characterized by a dense network of irrigation canals, vast green expanses of sugarcane fields, and small agricultural villages interspersed with groves of mango and guava trees.

The local agricultural economy is heavily dominated by sugarcane, which serves as the primary cash crop and feeds several nearby sugar mills. In addition to sugarcane, farmers practice intensive double-cropping, cultivating high-yield varieties of wheat during the winter (rabi) season and rice (paddy) during the summer monsoon (kharif) season. Horticulture also plays a significant role, with expansive orchards producing high-quality mangoes, alongside commercial cultivation of mustard, blackgram, and various seasonal vegetables.

For visiting agronomists and agricultural workers, Gangoh offers substantial seasonal opportunities, particularly during the winter sugarcane harvesting and crushing season from November to April, as well as the spring wheat harvest. Farm workers are primarily engaged in manual harvesting, loading, and transport operations, while agronomists are increasingly needed to advise on modern irrigation techniques, soil health management, and pest control to improve crop yields. Visitors should expect a traditional rural environment with hot summers, a distinct monsoon season, and highly labor-intensive farming practices.
