Serampore, historically known as Srirampur, is situated on the western bank of the Hooghly River in the Hooghly district of West Bengal, India. The surrounding rural landscape is part of the incredibly fertile, flat Gangetic delta, characterized by rich alluvial soils, extensive canal networks, and a tropical wet-and-dry climate. This green, densely populated countryside is dotted with small villages, traditional homesteads, and smallholder farms that stretch across the highly productive plains.
