About agriculture in Batur

Batur is situated in the highlands of the Bangli Regency in northeastern Bali, nestled within the massive caldera of Mount Batur. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the dramatic volcanic cone and the crescent-shaped Lake Batur, offering a cooler, temperate climate compared to the tropical coast. The rural area is characterized by fertile volcanic soil and terraced fields that climb the steep slopes of the caldera.

The region's agriculture is diverse, benefiting significantly from the nutrient-rich volcanic earth. It is renowned for the production of high-quality Arabica coffee and a variety of citrus fruits, particularly the sweet Batur oranges. Farmers also cultivate various highland vegetables such as cabbages, tomatoes, and onions, alongside traditional rice paddies in lower elevations. Small-scale livestock farming, involving cattle and pigs, is also common throughout the rural settlements.

For agronomists and seasonal workers, Batur offers unique opportunities in highland farming and sustainable coffee production. Peak labor demand typically coincides with the coffee harvest between May and August, as well as the fruit picking seasons. The work environment is physically demanding due to the hilly terrain, but the cooler climate provides a more comfortable atmosphere for outdoor labor compared to the Balinese lowlands.
