About agriculture in Urmia (Orumiyeh)

Urmia, also known as Orumiyeh, is the capital of West Azerbaijan Province in northwestern Iran. It is situated on a vast, fertile plain between the western shores of Lake Urmia and the high mountain ranges that border Turkey. The surrounding rural landscape is a mix of lush orchards and well-irrigated fields that benefit from the region's relatively high precipitation and numerous rivers flowing from the mountains.

The region is a major agricultural hub, particularly famous for its fruit production. Extensive apple orchards and vineyards dominate the landscape, with Urmia being one of the largest producers of apples and grapes in the country. In addition to fruit, farmers cultivate sugar beets, sunflowers, and cereals. Livestock farming, including sheep and cattle, is also common in the hilly areas surrounding the plain, often integrated with traditional honey production.

For agronomists and seasonal farm workers, Urmia offers significant employment opportunities, especially during the harvest seasons from late summer to late autumn. Jobs range from large-scale fruit picking and sorting to technical roles in irrigation management and modern greenhouse cultivation. The area's diverse agricultural base ensures a steady demand for expertise in crop protection and soil science, making it a key destination for professionals in the Iranian agricultural sector.
