About agriculture in Khalis

Khalis is located in the Diyala Governorate of eastern Iraq, situated approximately 15 kilometers north of the regional capital, Baqubah, and about 80 kilometers north of Baghdad. The surrounding rural area is characterized by the highly fertile alluvial soils of the Mesopotamian plains, heavily irrigated by canals branching from the Diyala River. The landscape is a picturesque mix of dense palm groves, vibrant green orchards, and open fields, creating a lush agricultural belt that stands in contrast to the surrounding arid terrain.

Agriculture is the economic lifeblood of the Khalis district, which is particularly renowned for its extensive citrus orchards producing oranges, lemons, and tangerines. In addition to citrus cultivation, the area boasts countless date palm plantations and fields dedicated to seasonal vegetables, wheat, and barley. Livestock farming is also common, with local smallholders raising sheep, goats, and cattle that feed on the abundant vegetation along the irrigation channels.

For farm workers and agronomists, seasonal labor demand peaks during the citrus and date harvests, spanning from late summer through the winter months. Opportunities exist for picking, sorting, and packaging produce, as well as maintaining the vital irrigation networks. Agronomists are particularly valued for their expertise in managing soil salinity, improving water efficiency, and implementing pest management strategies to protect citrus and date palm crops from local diseases.
