About agriculture in La Thuile

La Thuile is situated in the western part of the Aosta Valley, close to the Little St Bernard Pass on the border with France. The surrounding rural area is characterized by a rugged Alpine landscape, featuring steep slopes, dense coniferous forests, and expansive high-altitude pastures that offer breathtaking views of the Mont Blanc massif.

Agricultural activities in this high-altitude zone are primarily centered on livestock farming, specifically the breeding of Aosta Valley cattle. During the summer months, the animals are moved to high mountain pastures, or 'alpages', for grazing. This transhumance cycle is essential for the production of high-quality milk used to make the traditional Fontina PDO cheese. In lower, sheltered plots, small-scale fodder production and cultivation of hardy crops like rye or potatoes may occur.

For farm workers and agronomists, seasonal demand peaks during the summer grazing season, from June to September. Opportunities exist for cattle herders, milkers, and workers in local dairies specialized in cheese production. Those coming to the area should be prepared for physically demanding work in a mountain environment and possess knowledge of Alpine livestock management and cold-climate agricultural practices.
