About agriculture in Civita Castellana

Civita Castellana is located in the northern part of the Lazio region, within the province of Viterbo, approximately 65 kilometers north of Rome. The town is situated on a high tuff plateau surrounded by deep, picturesque gorges carved by tributaries of the Tiber River. The surrounding rural landscape is characterized by rolling volcanic hills, fertile plains in the Tiber valley, and the prominent silhouette of Mount Soratte to the south.

The agricultural economy of this area is heavily focused on tree crops, with hazelnut groves being the dominant feature of the landscape, contributing significantly to the region's status as a major producer of Italian hazelnuts. In addition to hazelnuts, there are extensive olive orchards producing high-quality extra virgin olive oil and vineyards that benefit from the mineral-rich volcanic soil. Cereal cultivation and some livestock farming, particularly sheep for local cheese production, are also present in the flatter parts of the valley.

For farm workers and agronomists, the peak demand occurs during the hazelnut harvest in late summer and early autumn, which requires significant seasonal labor. There is also consistent work available for the winter pruning of nut and olive trees. Agronomists with expertise in nut crop management, irrigation systems, and sustainable pest control will find professional opportunities here, as local farms increasingly modernize their production and processing facilities.
