About agriculture in Livigno

Livigno is located in an isolated high-altitude valley in the province of Sondrio, Lombardy, near the Swiss border. Often referred to as "Little Tibet" due to its unique microclimate and elevation, the town is surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Rhaetian Alps. The rural landscape consists of steep slopes and vast mountain plateaus that remain covered in snow for a significant part of the year, transitioning into lush green meadows during the short but intense summer season.

Due to the high altitude and harsh climate, traditional crop farming is very limited in the area. Agricultural activities are primarily focused on livestock farming, specifically dairy cattle and goats that graze on alpine pastures (alpage) during the summer months. This region is well-known for its high-quality dairy production, including traditional mountain cheeses and butter, which are often processed in local artisanal dairies and cooperatives.

For farm workers and agronomists, the main demand for labor occurs during the summer grazing season when livestock are moved to high-altitude meadows. Jobs typically involve animal care, milking in mountain huts, and haymaking in the lower parts of the valley. While tourism is the dominant industry, the agricultural sector remains vital for land management and local heritage, requiring workers who are physically fit and capable of working in unpredictable mountain weather conditions.
