About agriculture in Lilongwe

Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi, is situated in the heart of the Central Region on a vast plateau. The rural landscape surrounding the city is characterized by gently rolling hills and fertile plains, typical of the African savanna, with numerous smallholder farms and larger estates stretching across the horizon.

The region is the backbone of Malawi's agriculture, dominated by the cultivation of tobacco, the nation's primary export. Other significant crops include maize, groundnuts, and soybeans. Livestock farming, particularly poultry and piggery, is also prevalent, serving the growing urban market and supporting the local economy.

For agronomists and seasonal workers, Lilongwe offers diverse opportunities ranging from field management on large estates to technical roles in processing plants and research centers. Peak labor demand occurs during the tobacco harvesting and auction season, as well as the main planting period following the onset of the rains in late November.
