About agriculture in Aussenkehr

Aussenkehr is located in the extreme south of Namibia within the //Kharas Region, situated directly along the northern banks of the Orange River. The surrounding landscape is characterized by a dramatic contrast between the rugged, sun-scorched desert mountains and the vibrant green strip of irrigated land that follows the river's course. This remote area serves as a vital agricultural oasis in an otherwise arid and sparsely populated wilderness.

The region is world-renowned for its large-scale production of export-quality table grapes, benefiting from a unique microclimate that allows for some of the earliest harvests in the Southern Hemisphere. Beyond the extensive vineyards, there are significant agricultural investments in date palm plantations and citrus orchards. In the drier outskirts of the irrigated zones, extensive livestock farming, particularly of hardy sheep and goats, remains a traditional activity.

For agronomists and farm workers, Aussenkehr offers substantial seasonal employment opportunities, particularly during the peak grape harvest from November to January. Jobs range from viticulture management and irrigation specialist roles to manual harvesting and packing house operations. Those coming to work here should expect a hot, demanding environment, but one supported by modern agricultural infrastructure and established commercial farming estates.
