About agriculture in Jomsom

Jomsom is located in the Mustang District of the Gandaki Province in northern Nepal, situated in the deep valley of the Kali Gandaki River at an altitude of approximately 2,700 meters. The town is surrounded by the dramatic, high-altitude landscapes of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, characterized by arid, wind-swept terrains, steep rocky cliffs, and sparse alpine vegetation. The surrounding rural landscape is marked by terraced fields lining the river banks and traditional stone-walled villages that contrast sharply with the towering, snow-capped peaks.

Due to the rain-shadow effect of the Himalayas, the climate is exceptionally dry, which shapes the local agricultural profile. Jomsom and the adjacent village of Marpha are globally renowned for their high-quality apple orchards, producing varieties that thrive in the cold mountain air and intense sunlight. In addition to temperate fruit production, local farmers cultivate hardy crops such as buckwheat, naked barley, and potatoes, while animal husbandry focusing on yaks, sheep, and mountain goats (chyangra) provides essential dairy, meat, and wool.

For agronomists and seasonal farm workers, Jomsom offers unique opportunities, particularly during the autumn apple harvest from September to November, when labor demand peaks. Agronomists can find rewarding work advising on cold-climate fruit preservation, high-altitude drip irrigation, and greenhouse management to extend the short growing season. Incoming workers should prepare for challenging high-altitude conditions, strong daily winds, and basic mountain accommodation, but they will gain invaluable experience in alpine farming resilience.
