About agriculture in Titahi Bay

Located on the west coast of the Wellington Region in New Zealand's North Island, Titahi Bay is a coastal suburb of Porirua, situated on a peninsula facing the Tasman Sea. The surrounding rural area is characterized by steep, undulating coastal hills, rugged cliffs, and lush green pastures that sweep down towards the sea. The nearby Pauatahanui Inlet and rural valleys like Ohariu offer a picturesque backdrop of rolling countryside, small lifestyle blocks, and larger pastoral properties.

Due to the hilly topography and coastal climate, agriculture in the immediate vicinity is dominated by pastoral farming, specifically sheep and beef cattle grazing. Dairy farming is present but less common compared to flatter regions of the country. Additionally, there are lifestyle blocks engaged in equestrian activities, hobby farming, and small-scale horticulture or market gardening in the sheltered valleys, producing local vegetables and cut flowers.

Farm workers and agronomists coming to the area can expect mostly year-round livestock management roles, with peak seasonal demands during the spring lambing and calving seasons. While large-scale agricultural jobs are limited compared to major farming hubs like the Wairarapa or Manawatu, the proximity to Wellington and Porirua provides good infrastructure, and opportunities exist on pastoral estates, lifestyle blocks, or in agricultural support services.
