Jinotega is situated in the north-central highlands of Nicaragua, nestled within a valley surrounded by the rugged mountains of the Isabelia Ridge. Known as the "City of Mists," the area is characterized by its cool, humid climate and the proximity of Lake Apanás, a significant artificial reservoir. The surrounding rural landscape is a mix of dense cloud forests and steep hillsides that overlook fertile valleys.

The region is the heart of Nicaragua's coffee production, benefiting from high altitudes and volcanic soil. Beyond the vast coffee plantations, the area is a major producer of vegetables such as potatoes, onions, cabbage, and lettuce, which are distributed throughout the country. Livestock farming is also present, with cattle raised for both dairy and meat on the lower slopes and in the flatter valley sections.
