About agriculture in Somoto

Somoto is the capital city of the Madriz department, nestled in a scenic valley in northern Nicaragua near the border with Honduras. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rugged mountains, pine forests, and the famous Somoto Canyon, creating a diverse rural environment with varying microclimates that range from dry lowlands to cooler highlands.

The region's agriculture is centered on the production of high-quality coffee in the cooler mountainous areas, which is a major export for the department. In the lower valleys, farmers focus on basic grains such as maize and beans, while livestock farming, particularly cattle for meat and dairy, remains a cornerstone of the rural economy alongside smaller-scale tobacco and vegetable cultivation.

Farm workers and agronomists can find seasonal opportunities primarily during the coffee harvest between November and March, as well as during the planting seasons for staple crops. The area features a mix of traditional smallholder farms and larger cooperatives, where expertise in sustainable farming practices and drought-resistant crop management is increasingly valued due to the regional climate challenges.
