About agriculture in Onsong

Onsong is situated at the northernmost tip of North Hamgyong Province, marking the northernmost point of the Korean Peninsula along the Tumen River. The landscape is characterized by rugged mountains and hills that descend into fertile alluvial plains near the riverbanks bordering China. The surrounding rural area is a mix of dense forest and terraced agricultural plots designed to maximize the use of the challenging terrain.

The region's agriculture is centered on staple crops such as rice, maize, and soybeans, which thrive in the river valley soils. Onsong is also recognized for industrial crops, including tobacco and sugar beets, as well as a long tradition of sericulture. Livestock farming, particularly cattle and goats, is practiced on the higher slopes where the terrain is less suitable for intensive grain cultivation.

For agronomists and seasonal workers, employment is primarily organized through state-run collective farms. Activity peaks during the spring planting and autumn harvest seasons, with a high demand for labor to manage manual field work and complex irrigation systems. The climate is continental with very cold winters, so most agricultural operations are strictly concentrated in the shorter frost-free months of the year.
