About agriculture in Tonstad
Tonstad is the administrative centre of Sirdal municipality, situated at the northern tip of the Sirdalsvatnet lake in the Agder region of southern Norway. The surrounding rural landscape is defined by its dramatic topography, featuring steep-sided forested valleys, rugged mountain plateaus, and numerous freshwater lakes and rivers. Due to the mountainous terrain, arable land is scarce and concentrated in the narrow valley floors, creating a picturesque but challenging environment for agricultural production.
Due to the short growing season and rugged terrain, agriculture in the Tonstad area focuses heavily on livestock farming, with sheep husbandry being the dominant sector. Sheep are typically turned out to high mountain pastures during the summer months to graze on natural forage. Aside from sheep, there is some dairy and beef cattle farming. Crop production is primarily limited to grass silage and hay for winter fodder, alongside small-scale cultivation of hardy crops such as potatoes for local supply.
For agricultural workers and agronomists, employment opportunities are largely seasonal and centered around sheep farming. Demand peaks during the spring lambing season and the autumn gathering and shearing period, when extra hands are needed to manage livestock. Work in this region requires physical fitness to navigate the mountain terrain, and experience with livestock handling or forestry is highly valued. While modern technology and machinery are widely used on local farms, adaptation to the variable mountain weather is essential.
