About agriculture in Glomfjord

Glomfjord is an industrial village located in the municipality of Meløy in Nordland county, Norway, situated at the head of the Glomfjorden just north of the Arctic Circle. The surrounding rural landscape is defined by its dramatic coastal geography, where steep, snow-capped mountains and deep fjords meet the Norwegian Sea. Despite its high latitude, the region benefits from the Gulf Stream, resulting in a relatively mild maritime subarctic climate, with the massive Svartisen glacier dominating the nearby mountainous interior.

Due to the rugged topography and northern climate, traditional crop cultivation is highly restricted, with local agriculture focusing mainly on grass production and livestock farming. Narrow valleys and coastal strips host family-run farms that primarily raise sheep and dairy cattle, producing silage and hay for feed. Although local farming is small-scale, Glomfjord is globally significant to agriculture as the home of the Yara Glomfjord plant, which produces massive quantities of NPK mineral fertilizers and calcium nitrate for global crop nutrition.

For agricultural workers, seasonal opportunities are limited to summer silage harvesting, pasture management, and sheep farming assistance. However, the presence of the Yara industrial facility makes Glomfjord a key location for specialized agronomists, soil scientists, and technicians focused on plant nutrition and fertilizer production. Anyone coming to work here should prepare for long summer daylight hours under the midnight sun, cool temperatures, and the unique challenges of working in a remote, mountainous Nordic environment.
