About agriculture in Moen

Moen is the administrative centre of Målselv Municipality, located in the Troms region of Northern Norway. The village is nestled in the fertile Målselvdalen valley, where the landscape is defined by the winding Målselva river, dense pine and birch forests, and dramatic mountain peaks. Despite its high latitude, the valley offers a relatively sheltered microclimate and flatter terrain suitable for cultivation compared to the surrounding rugged coastal areas.

Agriculture in Moen and the wider Målselvdalen area is surprisingly robust, making it one of the key agricultural regions in Northern Norway. The farming economy centers on livestock, particularly dairy cattle, sheep, and goats, which graze on lush summer pastures. Due to the short growing season, crop cultivation focuses on grass silage for fodder, cold-hardy potatoes, and vegetables, with the region being particularly famous for the Målselv turnip (Målselvnepe), a traditional local landrace. Forestry is also commonly combined with farming activities.

For agronomists and farm workers, seasonal demand peaks from late June through September, during the silage harvest and the vegetable and turnip harvesting season. There are opportunities for dairy farm assistants, tractor operators, and manual harvesters. Visitors should prepare for long working days under the midnight sun, demanding weather conditions, and a strong emphasis on modern farm machinery and sustainable northern farming practices.
