About agriculture in Carhuamayo

Carhuamayo is located in the Junín Region of Peru, situated on the high-altitude Bombón Plateau at over 4,000 meters above sea level. The surrounding landscape is characterized by the vast, cold Andean puna grasslands and its proximity to the shores of Lake Junín. The terrain is largely flat but rugged, dominated by high-mountain vegetation and a climate that remains cool throughout the year.

Agriculture in this high-altitude zone is specialized, with Carhuamayo being world-renowned as a primary center for maca cultivation. The hardy maca root thrives in these harsh conditions where few other crops can survive. In addition to maca, the area supports extensive livestock farming, particularly sheep, alpacas, and llamas, which graze on the natural ichu grass common to the Andean highlands.

For agronomists and seasonal workers, the region offers opportunities focused on high-altitude crop management and animal husbandry. Maca harvesting and initial processing are the most labor-intensive periods, typically occurring between June and August. Workers should be prepared for the physical challenges of working at extreme altitudes and in cold, windy conditions typical of the central Peruvian Andes.
