About agriculture in Ninacaca

Ninacaca is situated in the Pasco Province of central Peru, nestled high within the Andes on the Bombón Plateau. The surrounding landscape is characterized by the vast, open expanses of the puna, featuring high-altitude grasslands and rugged terrain under a cold, thin atmosphere. Located near the shores of Lake Junin, the rural area is dominated by natural pastures that stretch across the rolling hills of the Altiplano.

Due to its extreme elevation, agricultural activities in the Ninacaca district are primarily focused on livestock farming. The region is well-known for raising Andean camelids, such as llamas and alpacas, as well as hardy breeds of sheep and cattle. Crop production is limited to high-altitude specialists, most notably maca, which thrives in these harsh conditions, and specific varieties of native potatoes suited for the Andean climate.

Agronomists and farm workers visiting Ninacaca should prepare for a challenging high-altitude environment with cold temperatures year-round. Employment opportunities are mostly centered on animal husbandry, including shearing, herd management, and veterinary care for highland livestock. Seasonal demand often peaks during the maca harvest or the livestock breeding and shearing seasons, requiring workers who are accustomed to physical labor in mountainous regions.
