About agriculture in Rubielos de Mora

Rubielos de Mora is a historic municipality located in the Gúdar-Javalambre comarca, within the province of Teruel in the southern part of the Aragon region, Spain. Situated at an elevation of over 900 meters above sea level, the town is nestled in a mountainous, rugged landscape characterized by the deep gorges of the Mijares and Rubielos rivers. The surrounding countryside features a mix of high-altitude plains, pine forests, oak woodlands, and rocky terrain typical of the Iberian System mountain range.

The agricultural sector in the region is shaped by its high altitude and Mediterranean-mountain climate. Traditional dryland farming dominates the arable land, with cereals and forage crops being primary cultivations, alongside small-scale orchards and vegetable gardens. Livestock farming is highly significant, particularly intensive pork production which feeds the famous Teruel ham industry, as well as extensive sheep farming for Ternasco lamb. Additionally, the area has become increasingly renowned for truffle cultivation, particularly the highly valued black truffle (Tuber melanosporum) grown in specialized oak plantations.

For agronomists and farm workers, Rubielos de Mora offers opportunities centered primarily on livestock management, forestry, and truffle cultivation. Seasonal labor demand peaks during the winter truffle harvest from November to March, as well as during the summer grain harvests. Workers should expect a cold, continental mountain climate in winter and warm, dry summers, with a quiet, rural lifestyle in a well-preserved historic community. Agronomists can find roles in modernizing livestock operations or managing mycorrhizal oak plantations for truffle production.
