About agriculture in Singra

Singra is a small, quiet municipality located in the province of Teruel, within the autonomous community of Aragon in northeastern Spain. Situated at an altitude of over 1,000 meters above sea level in the Iberian Mountain Range, the surrounding rural landscape is defined by vast, high-altitude plains, rolling limestone hills, and sparse semi-arid vegetation. The area experiences a continental Mediterranean climate characterized by long, cold winters and short, dry, hot summers, which shapes both the local way of life and the rugged, open landscape.

Agriculture in Singra is adapted to these harsh climatic conditions, with dryland cereal cultivation, particularly barley and wheat, being the predominant land use. Extensive sheep farming is another cornerstone of the local agricultural economy, producing high-quality lamb under the Ternasco de Aragón designation. In the surrounding stony limestone soils, the cultivation of black truffles (Tuber melanosporum) in association with holm oaks has become a highly lucrative modern industry, alongside traditional, small-scale cultivation of olive groves, almonds, and saffron.

For agronomists and farm workers, Singra offers seasonal employment opportunities that peak during the summer cereal harvest in July and August, as well as the winter truffle harvesting season from November to March. Agronomists can find work advising on dryland soil management, crop rotation, and truffle cultivation techniques. Those coming to work in the area should expect a quiet, sparsely populated rural environment and must be prepared for extreme weather variations, including intense summer heat and freezing winter winds.
