About agriculture in Riberos de la Cueza

Located in the northern part of Spain's high plateau (Meseta Central), Riberos de la Cueza is a small municipality situated in the province of Palencia within the autonomous community of Castile and León. The surrounding rural area is part of the Tierra de Campos region, characterized by its vast, gently rolling clay plains and open horizons. The landscape is crossed by the Cueza River valley, which introduces a strip of green vegetation and reformed riverbeds into the otherwise dry and expansive steppe-like environment.

The local economy is deeply rooted in traditional Spanish agriculture, dominated by extensive dryland farming. The fields surrounding the town are primarily dedicated to winter cereals such as wheat, barley, and oats, alongside sunflowers and some leguminous crops used for crop rotation. Sheep livestock farming is also prominent in the area, maintaining a historical presence and contributing to the local production of quality dairy and meat products. In recent years, sustainable practices have been introduced to protect local steppe bird habitats while maintaining agricultural yields.

For agronomists and agricultural workers, seasonal activities peak during the summer cereal harvest between June and August. Machinery operators, truck drivers, and general farm workers find employment opportunities during this high-demand period, while agronomists are needed to advise on crop rotations, soil health, and biodiversity conservation projects. The continental climate brings very cold, windy winters and hot, dry summers, so workers should prepare for intense heat during the harvesting season.
