About agriculture in Santa Croya de Tera

Santa Croya de Tera is a municipality in the province of Zamora, located in the autonomous community of Castile and León in northwestern Spain. The town lies on the fertile right bank of the Tera River at an altitude of approximately 727 meters. The surrounding landscape features a river valley with green meadows, lines of poplars along the banks, and flat agricultural fields bordered by drier Mediterranean shrubland and low hills.

Agriculture in the Tera valley is diverse, combining irrigated farming near the river with dryland cultivation on the higher slopes. Major crops include cereals like wheat and barley, maize, and forage crops such as alfalfa. The region is also known for its vineyards, which are part of the local Valles de Benavente wine region, as well as small-scale vegetable production. Livestock farming is equally important, particularly sheep farming for regional cheese production, alongside pig and beef cattle breeding.

For agronomists and seasonal farm workers, labor demand peaks during key harvest periods, especially the grape harvest (vendimia) in early autumn and the summer harvests of grains and forage. Livestock and dairy farms offer more stable, year-round employment opportunities. Those coming to work here should expect a traditional, rural Spanish environment where Spanish language skills are essential, and having a personal vehicle is highly recommended due to limited public transport between the valley's farms.
