About agriculture in Soria
Soria is located in the eastern part of the autonomous community of Castile and León in north-central Spain. Situated at an altitude of over 1,000 meters above sea level along the Duero River, the surrounding rural landscape is characterized by a rugged, high-altitude plateau, dense pine forests, and rolling hills transitioning into the Sistema Ibérico mountain range. The climate is continental with cold, long winters and dry, warm summers, creating a scenic but demanding natural environment.
The agricultural sector in the province of Soria is defined by extensive dryland farming, with a strong focus on winter cereals such as wheat and barley. Beyond traditional field crops, Soria is famous for its forestry sector, particularly resin extraction and wild mushroom harvesting, as well as being a premier region for black truffle (Tuber melanosporum) cultivation in oak woodlands. Livestock farming is also prominent, consisting mainly of extensive sheep farming and modern pig production facilities scattered across the countryside.
For visiting agronomists and farm workers, seasonal labor peaks during the summer cereal harvest and the winter black truffle season, which runs from December to March. Job opportunities range from forestry management and agricultural consultancy to hands-on livestock husbandry and crop harvesting. Given the region's low population density, having a personal vehicle is highly recommended for commuting between remote farms, and workers should prepare for significant temperature variations, particularly freezing winter conditions.
