About agriculture in Santa Coloma de Queralt
Santa Coloma de Queralt is located in the northern part of the Conca de Barberà comarca, in the province of Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. Situated on an elevated plateau at approximately 670 meters above sea level near the border of the Segarra region, the town is surrounded by a vast, open rural landscape. The terrain is characterized by rolling hills, wide agricultural plains, and scattered patches of Mediterranean pine and oak woodlands, typical of the Catalan central depression.
The agriculture of this region is heavily dominated by dryland farming, with cereal crops such as barley and wheat covering the vast majority of the cultivated land. The local cooperative, Agropecuaria Coperal, plays a central role in processing and distributing these grains. In addition to extensive grains, the area features smaller plantations of olives, almonds, and vineyards, alongside livestock farms specializing in pig, poultry, and sheep production.
For agronomists and farm workers, the area offers seasonal opportunities focused primarily around the summer cereal harvest from June to August, as well as the autumn grape and olive harvests. Employment ranges from machinery operators and tractor drivers to livestock caretakers and agricultural consultants specializing in dryland crop optimization. Workers should prepare for a continental-Mediterranean climate, with cold winters and very warm, dry summer days.
