About agriculture in Torremejía

Torremejía is located in the heart of the Tierra de Barros region within the province of Badajoz, Extremadura. The landscape is characterized by vast, gently rolling plains famous for their fertile red clay soils, which give the region its name. It sits along the historic Vía de la Plata route, surrounded by an expansive rural horizon typical of the southern Spanish meseta.

The local economy is deeply rooted in viticulture and olive production. As a significant part of the Ribera del Guadiana wine region, the area is dominated by extensive vineyards producing high-quality grapes and traditional olive groves for oil extraction. Cereal cultivation also plays a secondary but important role in the surrounding agricultural landscape, making use of the open fields.

For agronomists and seasonal farm workers, the peak demand occurs during the grape harvest (vendimia) in late summer and the olive harvest in late autumn and winter. Practical opportunities range from manual harvesting to the operation of modern agricultural machinery. Those coming to work should expect a Mediterranean climate with very hot summers, requiring physical endurance for outdoor field tasks.
