About agriculture in Pantón

Pantón is located in the province of Lugo, in the southern part of the Galicia region in northwestern Spain. Nestled in the heart of the Ribeira Sacra, the area is defined by the dramatic canyons of the Miño, Sil, and Cabe rivers. The surrounding countryside is a green, rolling landscape of dense forests, fertile valleys, and steep riverbank slopes carved into ancient terraced vineyards.

Agriculture in Pantón is dominated by viticulture, with vineyards lining the steep terraced slopes producing high-quality Mencía and Godello grapes under the Ribeira Sacra Denominación de Orixe. Beyond grape growing, the local agricultural economy includes extensive livestock farming, primarily beef and dairy cattle grazing on the lush pastures of the valleys. Smallholders also engage in traditional mixed farming, cultivating potatoes, forage corn, and seasonal vegetables for local consumption.

For agronomists and farm workers, the peak seasonal demand occurs during the grape harvest (vendimia) in late September and early October, offering abundant short-term labor opportunities. Because of the steep terrain, much of the harvesting must be done by hand, which is physically demanding but rewarding. Agronomists specializing in sustainable viticulture and modern enology are increasingly sought after by local bodegas, while livestock farms provide stable, year-round employment in herd management and agricultural consulting.
