About agriculture in Tui
Tui is a historic city located in the province of Pontevedra, in the southern part of the Galicia region of Spain, situated on the right bank of the Miño River which forms a natural border with Portugal. The surrounding rural landscape, known as the Baixo Miño (Lower Miño) valley, is characterized by its lush greenery, fertile alluvial soils, and an exceptionally mild and sunny microclimate protected from the harsh Atlantic winds by nearby mountains. Rolling hills, dense pine and eucalyptus forests, and small, family-owned agricultural plots (minifundios) define the visual character of the countryside.
The region's unique climate makes it a powerhouse for specific agricultural sectors, most notably viticulture, with Tui being part of the Rías Baixas Denominación de Origen wine region where premium grapes like Albariño, Loureira, and Treixadura are grown on traditional elevated trellis pergolas. In addition to high-quality white wines, the Baixo Miño valley is Spain's premier hub for kiwifruit cultivation and is highly renowned for its intensive floriculture, ornamental plant nurseries, and greenhouses. While small-scale livestock farming, particularly cattle for dairy and meat, exists, the local agricultural economy is strongly dominated by these high-yield fruit, vegetable, and horticultural nursery operations.
For agronomists, horticulturists, and seasonal farm workers, Tui offers a highly professionalized and technical agricultural environment, with year-round activity in the modern greenhouse facilities and ornamental nurseries. Seasonal labor demand peaks significantly during the grape harvest (vendimia) in September and October, as well as during the kiwi harvesting and pruning seasons. Workers coming to the area can expect a mild climate but should be prepared for high relative humidity and frequent rainfall, typical of Galicia, making waterproof gear essential.
