About agriculture in San Asensio

San Asensio is a municipality located in the Rioja Alta subregion of the La Rioja province in northern Spain. The town is situated on a hill overlooking the scenic valleys of the Ebro and Najerilla rivers, surrounded by a rolling landscape dominated by vast vineyards. The Sierra de Cantabria mountain range provides a dramatic backdrop to this traditional agricultural region, which is characterized by its clay-limestone soils and Mediterranean-influenced climate.

Viticulture is the cornerstone of San Asensio's economy, with the municipality being widely recognized as the birthplace of Rioja claret wine. The surrounding fields are almost entirely dedicated to growing grape varieties such as Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Viura. In addition to extensive vineyards, the alluvial plains near the Najerilla river support small-scale cultivation of cereals, sugar beets, and various vegetable crops, while livestock farming plays a very minor role.

For agricultural workers and agronomists, seasonal labor demands peak during the autumn grape harvest (vendimia) from September to October. Vineyard maintenance, including winter pruning and spring vine training, provides additional employment opportunities throughout the year. Agronomists visiting the area can find work in quality control, soil management, and pest prevention, particularly in managing vineyard diseases like mildew and oidium.
