About agriculture in Rozas de Puerto Real

Rozas de Puerto Real is located in the southwestern corner of the Community of Madrid, Spain, right at the border with the provinces of Ávila and Toledo. Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra de Gredos within the Sierra Oeste region, the town is surrounded by a rugged, mountainous landscape. The area is particularly famous for housing the largest and most ecologically significant chestnut forest in the Madrid region, creating a picturesque, lush green environment that contrasts with the dry plains of central Spain.

The agricultural sector of Rozas de Puerto Real is deeply anchored in livestock farming and chestnut cultivation. For centuries, the town was a strategic checkpoint on the Cañada Real Leonesa Oriental for trashumancia, the seasonal movement of Merino sheep and other livestock. Today, extensive cattle and sheep farming remains a main economic pillar, alongside the cultivation of high-quality chestnuts. In addition, the region's unique high-altitude microclimate supports small-scale cultivation of ancient grapevines, particularly the Garnacha variety.

For agronomists and farm workers, Rozas de Puerto Real offers seasonal employment opportunities, particularly during the autumn chestnut harvest in October and November. There is also a demand for workers experienced in viticulture and year-round livestock care. Agronomists can find opportunities in forest preservation, helping protect the historic chestnut groves from diseases, as well as in managing pasturelands and optimizing livestock operations.
