About agriculture in Xixona
Xixona, also known as Jijona, is situated in the province of Alicante within the mountainous interior of the Valencian Community. It is nestled at the foot of the Sierra de la Carrasqueta, offering a landscape characterized by rugged terrain, deep valleys, and traditional stone-walled terraces that climb the surrounding hillsides.
The agricultural identity of the area is defined by the extensive cultivation of almond trees, which thrive in the local microclimate. Alongside almonds, there are significant plantations of olive and carob trees. Apiculture is also highly developed here, as the surrounding mountains provide a rich source of wild rosemary and thyme for high-quality honey production.
Farm workers can find seasonal employment primarily during the almond harvest in late summer and the olive harvest in late autumn. Agronomists may focus on orchard management and the integration of raw materials into the local food processing industry. The town is famous for its nougat (turrón) production, which drives much of the demand for local agricultural products.
