About agriculture in Hopa

Hopa is a coastal town in the Artvin Province of Turkey, situated on the eastern shores of the Black Sea, very close to the Georgian border. The surrounding landscape is characterized by steep, lush green mountains that descend sharply to the sea, creating a humid and high-precipitation environment typical of the Eastern Black Sea region. The rural areas are filled with dense forests and terraced fields carved into the mountain slopes.

The agricultural economy of the Hopa district is dominated by tea cultivation and hazelnut production. Due to the mountainous terrain and high rainfall, large-scale mechanized farming is limited, favoring small to medium-sized family-run plantations. Additionally, the region is known for its apiculture, producing high-quality honey from the diverse mountain flora, and some citrus fruits are grown in the lower coastal areas.

For agronomists and seasonal workers, Hopa offers opportunities primarily during the tea harvest cycles, which occur several times between May and October. Work involves manual harvesting on steep slopes and initial processing at local tea factories. Professionals in plant protection and soil management are often needed to maintain the productivity of tea gardens in this unique microclimate.
