About agriculture in Torun

Torun is a village in the Khust district of Zakarpattia Oblast, situated in the picturesque Carpathian Mountains near the Wyshkivskyi Pass. The surrounding landscape is dominated by steep forested slopes, alpine meadows known as polonynas, and the upper reaches of mountain rivers. The area is characterized by its clean air and rugged terrain, typical of the high-altitude regions of Western Ukraine.

Due to the mountainous climate and terrain, large-scale crop farming is limited. Agriculture here focuses on livestock breeding, particularly sheep and cattle, which graze on the rich mountain pastures during the summer months. Small-scale vegetable gardening and the cultivation of potatoes and forage crops are common on family farms, while the collection and processing of wild berries, mushrooms, and medicinal herbs from the surrounding forests play a significant role in the local economy.

Farm workers coming to Torun can find opportunities primarily in livestock management and seasonal harvesting of forest products. During the summer, there is a demand for shepherds and those skilled in traditional dairy production, such as making mountain sheep cheese. While the scale of commercial agriculture is smaller than in the lowlands, agronomists may find interest in sustainable mountain farming practices; workers should be prepared for changing mountain weather and the physical demands of high-altitude farming.
