A recent study from UCLA has brought the controversial insecticide chlorpyrifos back into the spotlight, identifying a more than 2.5-fold increased risk of Parkinson’s disease associated with long-term residential exposure. While the study focuses on residential proximity, it adds significant weight to the growing body of toxicological evidence that has already triggered a total ban on the substance across the European Union.

For European farmers, chlorpyrifos—once a staple for controlling aphids and various beetle larvae in crops like sugar beets, cereals, and orchards—has been off the market since 2020. The EU decision to ban the pesticide was based on concerns regarding developmental neurotoxicity, and this new epidemiological evidence further validates the precautionary approach taken by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

Farmers are increasingly relying on biological control agents, crop rotation cycles that break pest life stages, and precision spraying technologies that minimize the environmental footprint. The loss of broad-spectrum options like chlorpyrifos is forcing a fundamental change in how crop protection is managed on a field-by-field basis.

Context for farmers: While the use of chlorpyrifos is prohibited in the EU, the study serves as a reminder to ensure rigorous adherence to current chemical safety protocols when using permitted alternatives.
