About agriculture in Moria

Moria is a traditional village located on the eastern coast of the island of Lesbos, within the North Aegean region of Greece. Situated just a few kilometers north of the regional capital, Mytilene, the area is characterized by rolling hills, ancient stone aqueducts, and a landscape dominated by vast, silver-green olive groves that stretch towards the Aegean Sea.

The agricultural sector in and around Moria is centered primarily on olive cultivation, as Lesbos is one of Greece's leading producers of high-quality olive oil. Small to medium-sized family farms also engage in the cultivation of citrus fruits and vegetables for local markets. Additionally, the surrounding rugged terrain supports pastoral activities, particularly the raising of sheep and goats used for the production of traditional Greek cheeses.

Farm workers and agronomists coming to the Moria area will find the highest demand for labor during the autumn and winter olive harvest, typically from November to February. Employment opportunities include harvesting, pruning, and maintenance of groves, as well as roles in local oil mills. While the work is physically demanding and seasonal, it offers a deep immersion into the traditional Mediterranean agricultural lifestyle.
