About agriculture in Ilam

Ilam is a picturesque municipality situated in the hilly region of Koshi Province in eastern Nepal. Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, the town is renowned for its lush rolling hills, misty landscapes, and deep valleys. The surrounding rural landscape is characterized by steep terraced slopes, verdant tea gardens, and rich biodiversity, all under a temperate climate that makes it uniquely scenic and agricultural.

The region is the agricultural powerhouse of eastern Nepal, most famous for its high-quality orthodox tea production, which is exported worldwide. In addition to extensive tea estates and smallholder tea farms, the local economy relies heavily on cash crops such as large cardamom, ginger, potatoes, and round chillies. Livestock farming is also prominent, with dairy production playing a key role, particularly in the processing of traditional hard cheeses like chhurpi and fresh milk products.

For agronomists and seasonal farm workers, Ilam offers diverse opportunities, particularly during the peak tea plucking seasons from March to November. Agronomists can find roles in crop quality improvement, organic farming transitions, and sustainable terrace management. Laborers are sought after for harvesting tea, cardamom, and ginger, though they should be prepared for steep terrain, changing weather conditions, and basic rural accommodation.
