About agriculture in Jerte

Located in the north of the Extremadura region, Jerte is the namesake town of the famous Valle del Jerte. Surrounded by the foothills of the Sierra de Gredos, the area features steep slopes, crystalline streams, and a microclimate shaped by the surrounding mountains, creating a lush green landscape within the heart of Spain. The rural surroundings are defined by narrow valleys and granite peaks that shelter the agricultural lands from harsh weather.

The economy is centered on the production of high-quality cherries, particularly the protected Picota variety. The valley is characterized by tiered terraces that climb the hillsides, where family-owned orchards dominate the landscape. Besides cherries, farmers also cultivate chestnuts and olives, while mountain pastures support small-scale livestock farming, primarily goats and sheep adapted to the rugged terrain.

For agronomists and farm workers, the primary season begins with the cherry blossom in early spring and peaks during the intensive harvest from May to July. There is a high demand for pickers and sorters during these summer months. Outside the harvest, employment focuses on tree pruning, irrigation management, and specialized organic farming techniques increasingly adopted in the region to meet European export standards.
